Francis Daniel Pastorius (1651 – c. 1720) was a German born educator, lawyer, poet and public official. He founded Germantown, PA in 1683 (absorbed into
Philadelphia in 1854), the 1st permanent German-American settlement and the gateway for emigrants from Germany. Germantown played a significant role in American history; it was the birthplace of the American Antislavery Movement. In 1688 Pastorius drafted the 1st protest against slavery in America and was a cosigner of the Germantown Quaker Petition Against Slavery, also the first petition against slavery made in the English colonies.
